Tampa, Fla. – Kiwanis StoryWalk® is an initiative from Tampa Kiwanis that is expanding to a 5th location! Designed to encourage literacy and exercise for children, the
StoryWalk® is a sign installation that displays a storybook along a walking path page-by-page. In order to read the story, families will walk along the path and read along. The newest Kiwanis StoryWalk® is installed at Rowlett Park and to celebrate, Tampa Kiwanis is hosting a ribbon-cutting dedication on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 10am at Shelter #211 with treats, free books and crafts for kids. Rowlett Park is located at 2401 E. Yukon St., Tampa FL 33604.
The Kiwanis StoryWalk® is maintained by volunteers from the Tampa Kiwanis Club who change the story each month. Books are hand selected to include fun adventures and
diverse characters aimed at children age 3-7. StoryWalk® is bilingual, with stories displayed in both English and Spanish.
“The Kiwanis Club of Tampa is excited to bring StoryWalk® to our newest location in the Tampa Bay area at Rowlett Park”, says Amanda Malinowski, Chair of the StoryWalk® Committee. “We know that early literacy and a love of reading is fundamental in a child’s educational development. Our hope is that StoryWalk® will encourage literacy skills and help make reading fun!”
The original Kiwanis StoryWalk® in Al Lopez was funded, installed, and continues to be maintained by The Kiwanis Club of Tampa. The literacy program has been expanded into four additional parks and the expansion is generously funded by The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County.
“We are excited to partner with Tampa Kiwanis on StoryWalk® as the project encourages literacy development by bringing books directly to children and families, said Rebecca Bacon, Executive Director of the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, it also is an ideal activity for families that allows them the pleasure of reading wonderful children’s books aloud while enjoying a walk together.”
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
